Custom Wood Signs — Laser Cut & Personalized
Upload a design, pick plywood thickness, get an instant quote. We laser-cut custom wood signs from 5mm and 12mm Baltic birch for names, families, letters, numbers, cake toppers, and street signs — fabricated in our LA workshop, shipped nationwide.
Custom Wood Signs Made the Right Way
A custom wood sign should be three things at once — readable from across the room, durable enough to outlast a marriage, and finished cleanly enough that no one questions the price. Most online sign shops compromise on at least one of these. They print on cheap MDF that warps, they sand sloppy edges, they upcharge for "premium" finishes that should be standard. We built our service around the opposite default: every sign cut on calibrated CO2 laser equipment from real Baltic birch plywood, every edge sanded by hand before it ships, every order treated as if it will be photographed and posted.
The result is a sign that holds up for a decade or longer in normal indoor conditions — and one that looks worth what you paid the moment it comes out of the box. The kind of custom wood sign people remember.
How It Works
The workflow is intentionally simple. You either pick a template (name signs, family signs, cake toppers, etc.) and customize it in the browser, or you upload your own design as PNG, SVG, DXF, or PDF. Our system traces the cut path, calculates the total cutting distance, and returns an instant price based on plywood thickness and finishing options.
- Choose a category — name sign, family sign, letters and numbers, cake topper, or street sign.
- Customize or upload — type the text and pick a font, or upload your own design file (see our file format guide for what works best).
- Pick thickness — 5mm Baltic birch for lightweight wall mounting and cake toppers, 12mm for substantial signs that read as carved rather than thin.
- Get instant pricing — based on cut path length, material area, and any finishing or hardware options you select.
- Approve and ship — most orders ship within 5-7 business days. Rush options available.
For larger or more complex projects — backlit signs, multi-material composites, full lobby installations — see our lobby signs or business signs service lines, where every project is custom-quoted.
Sign Types We Make
We organize the laser-cut wood sign service into five core categories, each with templates, customization options, and example pricing:
- Custom Name Signs — Personalized first-name and last-name plaques in dozens of font styles. The most popular category for nurseries, weddings, gifts, and home decor.
- Family Name Signs — "Established 2018" style family monograms with a last name and date. The classic farmhouse-style sign — still the highest-converting category for housewarming and wedding gifts.
- Custom Wood Letters and Numbers — Individual cut letters and numbers for nursery walls, address plaques, classroom signs, and DIY projects. Sized from 4 inches to 24 inches per letter.
- Laser-Cut Wood Cake Toppers — Wedding, birthday, baby shower, and event cake toppers in elegant scripts and modern fonts. 5mm thickness, food-safe finishes, with prong attachments.
- Custom Street Name Signs — Personalized street-style signs with custom street names, perfect for man caves, garages, sports fan rooms, and gifts.
Plywood Thickness: 5mm vs 12mm
Plywood thickness is the single biggest factor in how a sign looks and feels — and where most online sign shops cut corners. We stock two thicknesses, each chosen for specific use cases.
5mm Baltic birch is the standard for lightweight applications: wall-mounted name signs, cake toppers, ornaments, layered decorative pieces, and anything that ships flat in a small box. It has a clean cross-grain edge once finished and weighs almost nothing — ideal when you are using removable adhesive strips or small mounting hardware. The downside: at 5mm a sign reads thin from the side, which works for some aesthetics but not for "this is a serious wood sign" presentation.
12mm Baltic birch is the premium thickness — heavier, deeper, and substantially more expensive to cut (the laser has to make multiple passes for clean cuts at this thickness). The result reads as carved rather than printed, casts a real shadow when wall-mounted, and has the structural rigidity to stand alone as a tabletop or shelf piece. We recommend 12mm for family name signs over 18 inches wide, any sign meant as a permanent feature, and pieces that will be free-standing.

What Files We Accept
We accept four file types, and the format matters more than most people realize. SVG and DXF are vector formats — they describe shapes mathematically, so the laser cuts exactly what you designed at any size. These are the preferred formats for any custom design. PDF works as long as the original was created in vector software (Illustrator, Affinity Designer, Inkscape, Figma) — exported PDFs from raster software like Photoshop will produce blurry traced edges. PNG and JPG are raster formats — we run them through automated tracing software (potrace) to convert pixels into cutting paths, but the trace quality depends entirely on the original resolution and contrast.
For custom designs — logos, monograms, signature scripts — vector files always produce better cuts. If you only have a photo or screenshot, our system will still work, but expect slight smoothing of fine details. See our complete file format guide for examples and best practices.
Materials and Finish Quality
Every sign is cut from Baltic birch plywood — a dense, void-free birch laminate that produces clean edges under laser cutting and takes finishes evenly. It is significantly more expensive than commodity import birch but delivers a noticeably better result, particularly on small-letter detail and tight inside curves. We also stock walnut-veneered substrate and solid maple for premium projects (available on request, with a small upcharge).
After cutting, every sign is hand-sanded to remove the slight burn marks that laser cutting leaves on plywood edges. We sand both faces and all cut edges with progressively finer grits — most online sign shops skip this step entirely, which is why their signs come with brown burn lines that look cheap. Our default finish is raw sanded — clean, natural birch grain. Optional finishes include clear hardwax oil (subtle protection, slight color richening), white or black paint (full color, smooth finish), or stain (walnut, espresso, weathered grey, others).
Pricing: Why Cut Path Length Matters
The price of a custom laser-cut wood sign is not just about size. The number that actually drives cost is cut path length — the total distance the laser has to travel to cut your design. A 12-inch wide sign with a simple block-letter name might have 30 inches of cut path. A 12-inch wide sign with a flowing script signature, internal cutouts, and decorative borders might have 200 inches. The second sign costs significantly more even though they are the same size, because the laser is on for longer and using more electricity, lens wear, and bed time.
Plywood thickness compounds this — at 12mm, the laser cuts at roughly half the speed it cuts at 5mm, so cut time doubles for the same path length. This is why our pricing engine looks at both numbers (path length × thickness factor) plus the material cost (bounding box area × material rate) plus a small setup fee that covers file processing, tape masking for delicate designs, and finishing labor.
This is the same way every serious laser-cutting service prices custom work — we just publish the formula instead of hiding it. Use a simpler design and you save money. Pick the thinner stock and you save more. We will tell you both numbers in the instant quote so you can adjust before you order.
Who Orders Custom Wood Signs From Us
Our customers split into a few clear groups. Wedding planners and couples ordering family-name signs, table numbers, ceremony backdrops, and cake toppers — typically 3-8 pieces per wedding, with rush turnaround. Parents and gift-givers ordering nursery name signs, baby shower decor, and personalized children's gifts — usually 1-2 pieces, often shipped directly to a recipient. Small business owners and Etsy sellers ordering wholesale runs of name signs and cake toppers for their own brand — repeat orders of 20-100 pieces with consistent designs. Real estate agents ordering closing-gift family signs for their clients. Interior designers using custom wood signs as part of nursery, family room, and home office design schemes.
Whatever the use case, the workflow is the same: upload, choose, quote, ship. For commercial volume orders (50+ identical pieces) email us directly for wholesale pricing.
Shipping and Turnaround
Most orders ship within 5-7 business days from approval. We pack signs in custom-cut foam inserts with rigid cardboard, and we have shipped over a thousand signs without a single damage claim — Baltic birch is more rigid than people expect, and our packaging method is over-engineered. Rush turnaround (2-3 business days) is available for an additional fee on most categories. Standard shipping is via UPS Ground for items under 24 inches, freight for larger pieces. We ship anywhere in the continental United States.
For Los Angeles area customers, local pickup is available at our workshop with a 2-day turnaround on standard orders.
Why Lumberthing for Custom Wood Signs
Three things separate us from typical Etsy sellers and the big online sign factories. Real CO2 laser equipment with regular calibration — we cut at consistent power and speed across thousands of orders, which is why our edges look the same on order #500 as on order #5. Hand-finished output — every sign is sanded after cutting, even the budget tier. Transparent pricing — the quote you see is the quote you pay, with no hidden setup fees or "design review" surcharges. We also fabricate larger commercial work — see lobby signs, 3D wall panels, and business signs for projects that need custom design and on-site installation.

Custom wood signs start from $28 for a small 12-inch name sign in 5mm Baltic birch. Pricing depends on size, design complexity (cut path length), plywood thickness, and finishing options. Family signs in 12mm start around $95, cake toppers around $24. Use our quote tool for instant pricing on your specific design.
We accept SVG, DXF, PDF, PNG, and JPG. Vector files (SVG, DXF, vector PDF) produce the cleanest cuts and are preferred for custom designs. PNG and JPG are auto-traced into cutting paths — they work but lose fine detail. See our file format guide for full details.
5mm is lightweight and fits most decorative wall signs, cake toppers, and ornaments. 12mm is substantially thicker, reads as carved rather than thin, and is the right choice for permanent feature signs and free-standing pieces. 12mm signs cost more because the laser cuts slower at thicker stock.
Standard turnaround is 5-7 business days from approval, plus shipping time. Rush orders (2-3 business days) are available for an additional fee. Local pickup in Los Angeles is available with 2-day turnaround.
