Custom Laser Engraved Wood Signs
Permanent designs burned into the wood surface — names, dates, quotes, logos, monograms. Engraving creates a darker contrast etched into Baltic birch on calibrated CO2 laser. Lasts decades, never peels, ages beautifully.
Engraving vs Cutting: What Is the Difference?
Cutting and engraving are two different operations on the same laser. Cutting burns all the way through the wood, producing a piece that is the shape of the design. Engraving burns into the surface only — typically 0.5 to 2 mm deep — producing a darker contrast pattern on a flat board. The two are often combined: a board is first cut to shape (rectangle, oval, or any silhouette), then engraved with text or imagery on the visible face. Engraved wood signs are the right choice when you want the design to be permanent and tactile — text that you can run your finger over, that will not peel or wear away in a decade. For pure cut shapes see custom name signs or individual letters.
What We Engrave
Engraving works for nearly any artwork that can be expressed in line work or shading. Names and family names on rectangular or oval plaques — most-popular use case for wedding gifts, memorial pieces, and home entryway signs. Quotes and verses — favorite quotes, song lyrics, religious verses on rectangular wood plaques. Logos and brand marks on small commercial signage and product tags. Coordinates and dates — wedding date and venue coordinates is a popular wedding gift template. Monograms and initials — interlocking letter designs on round or square plaques. Detailed imagery — line drawings, technical illustrations, photographs converted to grayscale. Photo engraving is its own technique that requires a contrast-optimized source file; we can guide you on prep.
Wood Types and Engraving Quality
Different wood species produce different engraving results. Baltic birch plywood (our standard) engraves with a clean medium-brown contrast against the lighter face surface — the most balanced look for general use. Cherry hardwood engraves a rich dark brown that ages to a warmer tone over time — premium for memorial and gift pieces. Walnut hardwood engraves nearly black, with high contrast against the natural walnut grain — the boldest visual reading. Maple engraves dark brown to almost black on the pale white surface — the highest-contrast option, ideal for fine detail and small text. Bamboo engraves cleanly with consistent depth, suitable for kitchen and food-related pieces. We default to Baltic birch unless you request a hardwood upgrade.
Common Use Cases
Engraving is the right call for projects where text matters as much as the silhouette. Wedding and anniversary gifts — names, date, venue, or song lyric engraved on a rectangular plaque, often paired with a wood-burned border. Memorial and remembrance pieces — name, dates, short verse engraved with care. Kitchen cutting boards and serving boards — family name or monogram engraved on bamboo or maple, food-safe finishes available. Trophy and award plaques — recipient name, achievement, date engraved on stained walnut. Coordinate plaques — GPS coordinates of a meaningful place (where you met, where you got married, your home address). Business desk plaques and door plaques — name and title engraved cleanly, professional and durable. For shaped letter cuts see custom wood letters.
Sizing and Layout
Engraved signs are usually rectangular or oval, sized for tabletop or wall placement. 5 × 7 inches works for desk plaques and small gifts — fits in standard frames if you want to display under glass. 8 × 10 inches is the most popular size for wall-mounted family signs and quote plaques — fits standard photo-frame proportions. 11 × 14 inches for feature pieces above a fireplace mantle or as a centerpiece in a small room. 16 × 20 inches for large statement plaques — typically commissioned for wedding gifts and milestone anniversaries. We engrave on plywood thicknesses from 5 mm to 12 mm. For the difference between thicknesses see our plywood guide.
Our Engraving Process
Every engraving project follows the same steps. Design preparation — text is set in your chosen font and engraving depth is specified (light surface, medium, or deep relief). For uploaded artwork we vectorize the file or process the raster for engraving. Test cut on a scrap of the same wood — we run a small test patch to confirm depth, contrast, and clarity before engraving the actual piece. Engraving — the laser runs the engraving pass, typically 5-20 minutes depending on size and detail. Cutting (if applicable) — if the piece needs an outer shape, the cut pass runs after engraving so positioning stays exact. Sanding and finish — the engraved area is brush-cleaned to remove residue, the whole piece is sanded smooth on faces and edges, then finished per your selection. Why Lumberthing for Engraved Wood Signs
Three things separate our engraving from generic Etsy laser shops. Calibrated equipment — we run the same engraving recipes across thousands of orders, so the depth and contrast you see on a sample matches the production piece. Most low-volume Etsy sellers eyeball settings per order. Test passes on real material — we run a depth test on every project before committing to the full piece, eliminating the "oh that came out lighter than I expected" surprise. Hand-finishing — every engraved piece gets sanded after the laser run; the engraving residue is brush-cleaned for a clean visual contrast. Most online shops ship engraved signs with visible burn fuzz that fades the contrast. We also fabricate complete custom wood signs, 3D wall panels, and architectural carving — see our other product lines for the full scope.
