Wood Cake Toppers Done Right

A laser-cut wood cake topper is the right alternative to plastic and acrylic for weddings, baby showers, and milestone events that want a natural, photographable aesthetic. Wood photographs warmer than acrylic, takes finishes well, and biodegrades after the event instead of contributing to landfill plastic. Every topper we make is cut from 5mm Baltic birch plywood on calibrated CO2 laser equipment, hand-sanded to remove burn marks (most online shops skip this step), and finished with food-safe sealant where requested. Topper Categories

We organize cake toppers into four common types. Wedding toppers — couple names ("Sarah & James") with a wedding date, "Mr & Mrs [Name]" formats, or a single word like "love" or "forever" in flowing script. Birthday toppers — milestone numbers (16, 21, 30, 40, 50, 60, 65, 75) often paired with names or "Happy Birthday" text. Single-digit toppers for first birthdays are extremely popular. Baby shower toppers — "Welcome [Name]," "Oh Baby," or "Baby [Last Name]" with a small icon (heart, baby footprint, ribbon). Anniversary toppers — milestone years (10, 25, 50) with names and a date. Sizing for Standard Cakes

Topper width should be roughly 60-70% of cake diameter for visual balance. For an 8-inch round cake, choose a 5-inch wide topper. For a 10-inch round, 6-7 inch topper. For a 12-inch round or first tier of a tiered cake, 7-9 inch topper. Two-tier and three-tier wedding cakes use 8-10 inch toppers placed on the top tier. Topper height should be 1.5-2.5 inches above the cake surface, accounting for prong depth (prongs sit ~1 inch into the cake). Font and Style Choices

Cake toppers heavily favor flowing script fonts — they photograph beautifully, the connected letterforms look elegant against the cake surface, and they suit the celebratory tone of cakes. About 70% of our cake topper orders use script fonts. Block fonts work for milestone birthday numbers and modern minimalist weddings. Serif fonts work for traditional and vintage themed events. Custom monograms — interlocking initials or family crests — are available; upload your design as SVG or DXF for best quality.

Finish Options for Food Contact

Default finish is raw sanded Baltic birch with a food-safe mineral oil treatment on the prong section that contacts cake. Most cake topper orders ship this way — clean, natural, photographable. For glossy finish: food-safe hardwax oil over the entire topper, slightly enriches color, dries to a soft sheen, completely cake-safe (we use Odie Oil or similar food-safe wood treatments). For color: white food-safe paint for high-contrast against dark cakes, black for contrast against light cakes. Note: only food-safe finishes will ever touch our cake toppers — we do not use standard furniture stains or paints on cake-contact pieces.

Prong Attachments and Stability

Every topper ships with two prong attachments — small wood pegs that insert into the bottom edge of the topper and into the cake itself. Prongs are 1-inch deep, food-safe finished, and friction-fit (no glue) so they remove cleanly after the event for keepsake. For larger toppers (8+ inches wide) we use three prongs for stability. The prongs are angled slightly forward so the topper leans back ~5 degrees for proper photographic angle. If you need a free-standing topper for a non-cake table display (dessert table, cocktail bar), we can ship optional tabletop bases instead of prongs for $4 extra.

Rush Turnaround for Events

Cake toppers are often ordered last-minute. Our standard turnaround is 5-7 business days from approval. Rush turnaround (2-3 business days) is available for $20 extra — we cut and ship same-week for events. Same-day pickup is available at our LA workshop for orders placed before 10am, ready by 5pm same day, $35 expedite fee. For weddings we strongly recommend ordering 4-6 weeks early — but if you forgot, our rush options exist for exactly this case. Free backup topper shipped with rush orders over 10 days from event date so you have a spare in case of damage.
