The Custom Street Sign Aesthetic

A custom street name sign is an instantly recognizable format — flat horizontal sign, your name plus "Ave" or "St" or "Lane," painted or routed onto a wood substrate. The visual references real street signs while making the space feel personal and intentional. Common use cases: man caves with the family last name "[NAME] AVE," garages with a workshop or hobby reference "[INTEREST] LN," kids rooms with a fun playful name, sports fan rooms ("LAKERS BLVD," "DODGERS DR"), and gift signs for housewarmings, retirements, and weddings. We laser-cut every sign from Baltic birch plywood on calibrated equipment and finish by hand.

Style and Layout Options

We carry three layout styles. Classic green-and-white (the standard US street sign look) — green painted background, white painted letters, professional appearance, instantly recognizable. Vintage routed — raw or stained Baltic birch with letters cut completely through (negative-space routing), so the sign reads as carved rather than painted. Works well in farmhouse, craftsman, and rustic interiors. Custom color — any background color paired with any letter color, including team colors for sports fan rooms (purple/gold for Lakers, blue/white for Dodgers, red/gold for 49ers, etc.). Provide hex codes or paint codes during checkout.

Standard Sizes

Real street signs are 24-30 inches wide and 6-8 inches tall — that proportion is what makes the sign recognizable as a "street sign." Our standard sizes follow this. 18 × 5 inches works for desk display, smaller wall vignettes, and gift-giving where shipping costs matter. 24 × 6 inches is the most-popular wall size — fits above a doorway, on a workshop wall, or as the centerpiece of a sports memorabilia display. 30 × 8 inches is feature size — large garage walls, full-room man cave installations. 36 × 9 inches for very large rooms; this is the maximum we ship in a single piece via standard ground shipping.

Wood Thickness

Both 5mm and 12mm Baltic birch work for street signs depending on the look. 5mm reads as flat (closer to a real street sign), is significantly cheaper, and works great for wall-mounted indoor display. 12mm reads as substantial and 3D — the depth makes the sign feel architectural rather than decorative. For green-and-white painted classic style, we recommend 5mm (the paint hides the edge, no benefit from thicker stock). For vintage routed (cut-through letters in raw or stained wood), we strongly recommend 12mm — the depth showcases the routing, and 5mm cut-through letters can look thin and fragile. Custom Street Name Conventions

For maximum street-sign recognizability, follow real street naming conventions. Use a street type abbreviation: AVE (avenue), ST (street), DR (drive), LN (lane), BLVD (boulevard), CT (court), WAY, RD (road), CIR (circle), TER (terrace), or PKWY (parkway). Match abbreviation to the vibe — AVE feels traditional and East-Coast, BLVD feels Hollywood, LN feels casual and homey, DR feels suburban. Block sans-serif font (uppercase) is the canonical street sign typography — we use it as the default. Real street signs always include a directional or block number prefix in the corner ("100 N MAIN ST") which we can add on request for full authenticity. About 30% of orders include this detail.

Mounting and Installation

Most customers wall-mount street signs flush — adhesive strips for 5mm signs (included), small screws and keyhole brackets for 12mm signs (also included). For an authentic street-pole look, we offer optional street-pole mounting hardware — a vertical wood pole (3 ft or 5 ft) painted matching color with the sign mounted near the top, perfect for corner-of-room display in man caves and game rooms. Pole add-on is $45-65 depending on length. Two-sided printing is available — same sign content on both faces — for hanging displays where both sides need to read. Add 25% to the base price for two-sided.
