Custom Channel Letter Signs Los Angeles
Dimensional illuminated channel letters for storefronts, office buildings, and exterior brand signage in LA. Front-lit, halo-lit, and reverse-channel options — fabricated and installed end-to-end.
What Are Channel Letters?
Channel letters are individually fabricated three-dimensional letters and logos — typically illuminated with internal LED modules — mounted directly to a building facade or interior wall. Each letter is its own enclosed "channel" with metal returns, a translucent or solid face, and a built-in light source. The result is a sign that reads cleanly during the day and glows at night, holding up to weather, sun, and decades of use. Channel letters are the standard for storefront identification, corporate building signs, and high-end interior brand walls. See our full business signage line for related options.
Channel Letter Types We Fabricate
There are three main illumination styles, each producing a different visual register at night. Front-lit channel letters have translucent acrylic faces that glow from the front — the most legible and traditional storefront approach. Halo-lit (reverse) channel letters have solid metal faces with the LED light spilling out the back, creating a soft glow on the wall behind each letter. This is the premium aesthetic — used by high-end boutiques, luxury hotels, and corporate headquarters. Front-and-halo combination letters glow both ways, doubling visibility at night without sacrificing the polished daytime look.
Materials & Construction
Letter returns (sides) are typically aluminum sheet — 5-inch, 8-inch, or custom depths depending on the architectural scale. Faces are either translucent acrylic for front-lit versions, brushed or painted aluminum for halo-lit, or laminated metal-on-acrylic composites for premium combinations. We use 5-year-warranty UL-listed LED modules from manufacturers like SloanLED and GE — known for their cool-white and warm-white consistency and minimal maintenance over a decade-plus lifetime. All exterior letters are sealed and powder-coated to handle Southern California sun exposure. Pair with our interior dimensional letters for a unified brand inside and out.
Where Channel Letters Work Best
Channel letters are the right call when your sign needs to read from across a parking lot, attract foot traffic from a sidewalk, or hold up under direct sun for ten-plus years. Common applications: retail storefronts (channel letters are required by most LA shopping center sign codes for tenants), restaurants and cafes (especially front-lit for evening visibility), corporate office buildings (halo-lit for premium tenant identification), medical and dental offices in strip centers, fitness studios and gyms, and auto dealerships. Less ideal for residential streets, historic districts with strict signage codes (where vinyl or painted signs are required), or temporary installations.
Permits & LA Sign Codes
Channel letter signs in Los Angeles almost always require a permit. The exact rules depend on your zone, building type, and whether your storefront is in a designated specific plan area (Hollywood, Downtown, Beverly Hills, etc.). We handle the permit submission as part of our service — we have submitted to LADBS, the city of Beverly Hills, Santa Monica, Burbank, Glendale, Pasadena, and West Hollywood, and we know the specific dimension limits and lighting restrictions in each. Typical permit timeline is 2-6 weeks, which we factor into your project schedule. For broader signage permitting context see our about and process page.
Our Channel Letter Process
Every project moves through five stages. Site survey — we visit the building, measure the mounting wall, photograph existing facade, and check the electrical situation. Design — we produce a scaled mockup showing the letters on your actual wall with day and night renderings. Permit submission — we package the design, electrical specs, and structural attachments for your jurisdiction. Fabrication — letters are built in our LA workshop: aluminum returns, faces, internal LED wiring, and weatherproofing. Typical fab time is 2-4 weeks. Installation — we install on-site, including raceway or direct-mount, electrical hookup, and a daytime/nighttime walkthrough with you. See recent projects for examples.
Why Lumberthing for Channel Letters
Most LA channel letter shops outsource fabrication to Mexico or wholesale suppliers in Texas and rebrand it. We fabricate every letter in our Los Angeles workshop — which means faster turnaround on rush jobs, control over LED quality, and the ability to fix or refurbish years later without source-tracing across three vendors. We also publish starting prices instead of forcing every conversation into a custom quote — saving you a week before you know if the project fits your budget. And our 100W laser plus 67"×98" CNC handle large-format and unusual shape projects that standard channel letter shops have to subcontract.
