Wedding Wood Sign Ideas: Family Signs, Toppers & More
Custom wood signs are the highest-converting category of decor we ship for weddings. They photograph beautifully, double as keepsake pieces after the event, and signal "this is a custom wedding" in a way that printed banners and rented vinyl never can. This guide covers the seven types of custom wood signs we make most often for weddings, with sizing, font, finish, and timing recommendations from real production.
Whether you are a couple planning your own wedding, a wedding planner sourcing for clients, or someone shopping for a wedding gift, this should help you pick the right pieces and order them in the right window.
Family Name Signs (The Wedding Gift)
This is the single most-ordered wedding category at Lumberthing. The format: the new last name in a clean script or serif font, often with the wedding date below ("EST. 2026"), cut from 12mm Baltic birch or walnut. Sized 24-36 inches wide for foyer placement in the couple's first home together.
Why it works: it captures the central event of the wedding — the joining of two people into one named household — and gives them a piece they can hang in every house they live in for the next fifty years. The "EST. [year]" line ages well; even decades later it reads as a celebratory marker rather than dated.
Recommended specs: 30-36 inches wide, 12mm Baltic birch (or walnut for premium gifting), walnut or espresso stain, Dancing Script or Great Vibes font. Order 6-8 weeks before the wedding to ship directly to the recipient, or to give in person at a shower. See our family name signs service for templates and pricing.
Wedding Cake Toppers
The cake topper is a small but high-impact piece — 5-9 inches wide, sitting on top of the wedding cake, photographed in every cake-cutting picture. Standard formats: couple names ("Sarah & James"), date ("MAY 25, 2026"), single word ("love" or "forever"), or "Mr & Mrs [Last Name]".
Most cake toppers we ship are 5mm Baltic birch with food-safe finish, prong attachments for cake insertion, and a flowing script font. Average size 6-8 inches for standard 8-10 inch cakes; larger 8-10 inches for tiered wedding cakes.
The keepsake angle matters: the topper is not actually for the cake — it is for after the event. Most couples display it on a shelf or shadow box for years. Choose a font and material that looks good off the cake too. See cake toppers service for the full category.
Ceremony Welcome Signs
The welcome sign greets guests as they arrive at the ceremony venue — typically near the entrance, sometimes at the seating directional point. Format: "WELCOME TO [Couple's First Names] WEDDING" with the date below, sized 24-36 inches wide on an easel or hanging stand.
Materials: 12mm Baltic birch with a stain or paint finish, depending on whether the ceremony is rustic outdoor (raw birch or walnut stain), modern minimalist (white paint), or traditional (espresso stain). Font: classic serif for formal weddings, script for romantic, bold sans for modern.
Standard production for a welcome sign: order 6-8 weeks early. Pair with an easel — we sell cherry or walnut easels as add-ons that match the sign material.
Reception Backdrops and Photo Walls
Larger feature signs — 48-72 inches wide — used as ceremony backdrops, sweetheart table backdrops, or photo walls at the reception. Format varies: family monogram, "Mr. & Mrs. [Name]," or a meaningful quote in large sculptural lettering.
For backdrops we use 12mm Baltic birch with reinforced backing, or solid hardwood for premium installations. Mounting: floor-standing freestanding (with a cherry or walnut base), wall-mounted, or hung from a frame structure.
Production for backdrop pieces is 3-4 weeks plus shipping. Order at least 8 weeks early. Many wedding planners place the order before the venue is finalized, with placeholder dimensions; we adjust the cut file once the venue measurements are confirmed.
Table Numbers
Custom wood table numbers are the small detail that makes a reception feel curated. Format: numbers 1 through whatever-the-highest-table-is, cut from 5mm Baltic birch, sized 5-7 inches per number, with tabletop base or low easel for display.
Two style options. Cut-out numbers — the digit shape is the entire piece, no rectangular surround. Modern minimalist look. Engraved plaques — small rectangular wood plaques with the number engraved into the surface. More traditional, more visible from across the room.
For 12-table weddings expect 12 numbers; we batch-produce sets at our letters and numbers service. Order 4-5 weeks early. Pricing is per-set — sets of 10-25 qualify for volume pricing.
Seating Charts
A wood-fabricated seating chart is a 24-36 inch sign listing guest names and table assignments, displayed at the entrance to the reception. Format: large rectangle of 12mm Baltic birch with engraved or painted text in two columns.
This is the highest-effort piece for the production team because the design depends on guest list finalization, which often happens within 7-10 days of the wedding. We pre-cut the wood blank 4-5 weeks early and engrave the names once the final list is locked, typically 1-2 weeks before the wedding. Rush turnaround is built into the workflow.
Material: maple is excellent for this format because of the engraving contrast — names read clearly from across a room. Baltic birch with a darker stain works too.
Direction and Information Signs
Smaller pieces that handle wayfinding and information at the venue. Bar sign, cards & gifts table sign, guestbook sign, restrooms direction, parking direction, hashtag sign for social media, cake-cutting time announcement. Each is typically 8-12 inches wide on 5mm Baltic birch.
These are inexpensive per-piece but add up across a full wedding — 8-12 small signs is typical for a complete wedding setup. Most planners order them as a coordinated package in one font and finish for visual consistency.
Coordinating a Complete Wedding Set
The strongest visual result comes from ordering everything in the same font, finish, and material — what we call a coordinated wedding package. Typical contents:
- Family name sign (gift for couple) — 30-36" walnut with stain
- Welcome sign (ceremony entrance) — 24-30" Baltic birch with stain
- Reception backdrop (sweetheart table) — 48-60" 12mm Baltic birch
- Cake topper — 7-9" 5mm Baltic birch, food-safe
- Seating chart — 24-30" maple with engraved text
- Table numbers (×10-15) — 5-6" each, 5mm Baltic birch
- Bar / card table / guestbook signs (×3-5) — 10-12" each, 5mm Baltic birch
Total cost varies by sizes and material upgrades, but a complete coordinated wedding package typically lands $1,200-2,800 — significantly less than rented decor at most wedding venues, and you keep all of it as keepsakes.

Font and Material Pairing
Three combinations work for nearly every wedding aesthetic.
Romantic / classic: Dancing Script or Great Vibes font, walnut stain on Baltic birch. Warm, traditional, photographs beautifully against any backdrop. Most popular combination.
Modern minimalist: Bebas Neue or Montserrat font, white paint on 12mm birch. Clean, contemporary, works in industrial venues, museum-style spaces, and modern outdoor weddings.
Rustic / outdoor: Caveat (handwritten) or Lobster font, raw natural birch with hardwax oil. Casual, warm, suits barn weddings, garden ceremonies, and farmhouse-style receptions.
Mixed-style weddings can combine: family name in script (romantic), table numbers in sans-serif (modern), backdrop in script — but pick one anchor font and one secondary at most. Three or more competing fonts read as inconsistent rather than custom.
Getting Started
If you are planning your own wedding, start with the family name sign — it is the most-loved piece long-term and sets the visual direction for the rest of the package. Once you pick the font and finish for that piece, the rest of the wedding signs follow the same recipe.
For wedding planners commissioning on behalf of clients, send us the wedding date, last name, color palette, and venue style — we will draft a coordinated package proposal within 2-3 business days. Email or use our quote request form.
For specific category browsing: family name signs, cake toppers, letters and numbers (table numbers), engraved plaques (seating charts), and carved wall art (custom monograms and reception backdrops).
For the technical side of wood selection see our guide to wood types and 5mm vs 12mm thickness comparison. For file format prep if you have a custom design or monogram, see our file format guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Order family name signs and large ceremony pieces 6-8 weeks before the wedding. Cake toppers and small signs need 4-5 weeks for stress-free turnaround. Rush turnaround (2-3 business days) is available for an additional fee on most categories if you ordered late.
30-36 inches wide is the most popular size — fits above a fireplace, on a console table, or as the centerpiece of a foyer wall in your post-wedding home. For a ceremony backdrop, 48-60 inches; for a smaller gift sign, 18-24 inches.
Flowing script fonts (Dancing Script, Great Vibes, Allura, Pacifico) are the dominant choice — about 70% of our wedding orders. Classic serif fonts (Playfair Display, Cormorant) work for traditional ceremonies. Bold block fonts (Bebas Neue) work for modern minimalist weddings.
Cake toppers are 5-9 inches wide, attach with prongs to the cake itself, and are usually 5mm thick for low weight. Ceremony backdrops and welcome signs are 30-60+ inches wide, free-standing or wall-mounted, typically 12mm thick for visual presence.
