Room Dividers & Privacy Screens: Custom CNC-Cut Options

Open floor plans have their advantages, but sometimes you need separation without building a wall. Custom CNC-cut room dividers and privacy screens solve this elegantly — they define zones, add visual interest, and filter sightlines while keeping a space feeling open and connected.

We fabricate custom dividers for offices, restaurants, retail stores, and hospitality spaces across Los Angeles. Here's what you need to know about materials, patterns, mounting, and cost.

Why CNC-Cut Dividers Over Off-the-Shelf

Stock room dividers come in generic patterns at fixed sizes. They rarely fit your exact space, never match your brand, and tend to look like afterthoughts. CNC-cut dividers are sized precisely for your opening, cut in patterns that complement your interior design, and fabricated in materials that make sense for your environment.

The price difference is smaller than most people expect. Stock decorative screens from design retailers run $800-$2,000 for a single panel. Custom CNC-cut panels start around $1,200 for a comparable size — but they fit perfectly, look intentional, and can incorporate branded elements.

Materials for CNC Room Dividers

MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard)

MDF is the workhorse material for painted dividers. It machines cleanly, holds intricate detail, takes paint beautifully, and costs less than solid wood. Standard thickness is 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) for structural integrity. Finished with quality paint, MDF panels are nearly indistinguishable from solid material.

Best for: painted dividers in offices, retail environments, and event spaces. Not recommended for high-moisture areas.

Baltic Birch Plywood

Baltic birch offers a natural, warm look with its distinctive edge layers visible at every cut. It's stronger than MDF at the same thickness and handles environmental changes better. The exposed plywood edge becomes a design feature rather than something to hide.

Best for: casual/creative offices, restaurants, retail spaces where a natural material feel is desired.

Solid Hardwood

Walnut, oak, and maple panels make premium dividers for high-end offices and hospitality. These are typically 0.75 to 1 inch (1.9-2.5 cm) thick and finished with clear coat to showcase the grain. Cost is significantly higher but the material quality is unmistakable.

Acrylic

Clear, frosted, or colored acrylic creates dividers that filter light rather than blocking it. Acrylic panels can be CNC-cut with intricate patterns, laser-engraved with subtle textures, or combined with opaque materials for contrast. Thickness ranges from 0.25 to 0.5 inches (6-12 mm).

Aluminum Composite

For outdoor applications or environments requiring fire-rated materials, aluminum composite panels (ACM) offer durability and code compliance. They machine cleanly and accept powder-coat finishes in any color.

Pattern Options

CNC routing allows virtually any 2D pattern to become a room divider. Popular categories include:

Geometric: Repeating hexagons, triangles, interlocking circles, or grid patterns. Clean and contemporary, works in most commercial settings.

Organic: Leaf patterns, branching forms, flowing curves, abstract botanical designs. Creates a softer, more natural separation.

Parametric: Algorithm-generated patterns with varying density — tighter at eye level for privacy, opener above and below for airflow and light. These are functionally superior for workplace dividers.

Branded: Patterns that incorporate logo elements, brand shapes, or industry-specific imagery. Subtle enough to read as texture from a distance but recognizable up close.

These same design principles apply to our architectural wall panel installations, where similar patterns wrap entire surfaces rather than standing as freestanding elements.

Mounting and Installation Options

Ceiling-Suspended

Panels hang from ceiling-mounted tracks or cables. This keeps the floor clear, allows panels to be repositioned, and works well for tall spaces. Panels can be fixed or sliding on a track system.

Floor-Standing with Base

Heavy steel or wood bases support freestanding panels without any ceiling or wall attachment. Bases are typically 18-24 inches (45-60 cm) deep for stability. Best for temporary installations or spaces where ceiling mounting isn't possible.

Wall-Anchored

Panels attach to one or both adjacent walls with brackets. This is the most stable option and works well for permanent installations in defined openings between rooms or zones.

Floor-to-Ceiling Fixed

Panels mount permanently between floor and ceiling, functioning like perforated walls. This creates the most definitive separation while still allowing light and air through the cut pattern.

Sizing and Configuration

Standard panel widths run 2-4 feet (60-122 cm). Multiple panels join together to span wider openings. Height is limited by material — MDF and plywood panels max out around 8 feet (244 cm) in a single piece. Taller installations use stacked panels with hidden joining hardware.

For dividers taller than 7 feet (213 cm), we recommend panel thickness of at least 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) and internal reinforcement for patterns with large open areas that could flex.

Pricing

Custom CNC-cut room dividers start at $1,200 for a single panel (approximately 4x7 feet / 122x213 cm) in painted MDF. Multi-panel systems for wider spans typically run $2,800-$5,500 depending on material, pattern complexity, and mounting hardware. Premium hardwood or backlit acrylic panels push higher.

Lead Time and Process

From design approval to delivery, expect 2-4 weeks. The process starts with measurements and design consultation, moves through digital mockups for your approval, then into CNC production and finishing. Installation is typically a half-day to full-day job depending on mounting complexity.

Frequently Asked Questions

MDF, Baltic birch plywood, solid hardwoods, acrylic, and aluminum composite panels are all common choices. Material selection depends on the environment and desired look.

Freestanding dividers typically range from 5 to 7 feet (150-210 cm). Ceiling-mounted panels can span full floor-to-ceiling heights up to 12 feet (365 cm).

Raw MDF and wood panels are not inherently fire-rated. However, we can apply fire-retardant coatings or use aluminum composite materials to meet commercial fire codes.
