Parametric Panels

Custom Parametric Wall Panels Los Angeles

Algorithm-driven feature walls carved on our 67" × 98" CNC. Voronoi, wave, fibonacci, and tessellation patterns in walnut, oak, and acrylic — designed in Grasshopper, finished by hand in our LA workshop.

What Are Parametric Wall Panels?

Parametric wall panels are dimensional surfaces where the pattern is generated by mathematical rules instead of drawn by hand. A designer sets parameters — cell size, density, flow direction, depth variation — and software like Grasshopper or Houdini computes thousands of unique cells that transition smoothly across the surface. The result is a wall that feels organic and inevitable rather than tiled or repeated. Every Lumberthing parametric panel is custom-generated for the wall it will live on, then carved on our 3-axis CNC and finished by hand.

Pattern Types We Fabricate

We work in five core families, each producing a different visual register. Voronoi cells create irregular polygonal regions that look like cracked stone or cell biology — premium and architectural. Wave and flow patterns produce continuous curves that morph across the wall, ideal for hospitality and wellness. Fibonacci and golden-ratio patterns deliver mathematical elegance that designers and architects recognize instantly. Tessellations — hexagonal, triangular, or pentagonal — give rhythmic repetition with subtle variation. Custom algorithmic patterns are written from scratch when a project needs a unique signature, often tied to a brand mark or site geometry.

Materials & Finishes

Walnut and white oak are our most-requested for parametric work — the grain catches the carved depth and adds warmth. Maple and birch plywood take stain well and cost less for large surfaces. Acrylic — clear, frosted, or colored — produces a luminous parametric panel when paired with LED edge lighting. For acoustic projects we layer carved wood over compressed felt backing, which absorbs mid-frequency sound while keeping the visible surface fully sculptural. Finish options include natural oil, hardwax, satin lacquer, or paint-grade primer for color-matched commercial brand work. See our full 3D wall panel options for material comparisons.

Where Parametric Panels Work Best

Hospitality lobbies and reception areas benefit most — a parametric feature wall replaces generic wallpaper or tile with a one-of-one surface that becomes the backdrop for every photo guests take. Corporate offices use parametric walls in conference rooms and elevator banks for understated wow-factor. Recording studios, podcast rooms, and home theaters pair parametric carving with acoustic backing. Restaurants and wellness spaces use organic flow patterns to soften industrial interiors. For brand-integrated installations see our brand wall fabrication.

Acoustic Parametric Panels

A parametric pattern that absorbs sound is the rare combination of beauty and function. We laminate carved wood faces over Class-A acoustic felt or compressed mineral wool. Cell density and depth tune which frequencies the panel absorbs — denser patterns target higher frequencies, deeper relief targets bass. Acoustic parametric panels are common in podcast and recording studios, conference rooms, and open-plan offices that need sound control without dropping ceiling tiles or rigid acoustic boxes. Tell us your room size and we will calculate the surface area required to hit your target reverb time.

Our Process: From Algorithm to Install

Every project moves through four stages. Concept — we discuss the space, light, brand, and acoustic requirements, then propose 2-3 pattern directions with rendered previews. Parametric model — your chosen direction is built in Grasshopper for Rhino, with parameters tuned to your wall dimensions and the depth budget. You see a 3D preview and approve before fabrication starts. CNC fabrication — toolpaths are generated, panels are cut on our 67" × 98" router, then sanded, finished, and acoustic-backed if specified. Install — we handle delivery and on-site mounting throughout the Los Angeles area, including French cleat or z-clip systems for heavy multi-panel installations. See our workshop and process for more on how we build.

Why Lumberthing for Parametric Panels

Most LA shops outsource CNC and hand-finishing. We do everything in one workshop, which means the parametric algorithm, the cut file, the sanding, and the install detail are all controlled by the same team. We publish starting prices instead of forcing every conversation into a custom quote — saving you a week of back-and-forth before you even know if the project fits your budget. And our 67" × 98" work field handles full-wall installations in a single piece, eliminating seams that smaller shops have to disguise. Read more about our LA workshop or browse recent projects.
