3D Wall Panels

Custom 3D Wall Panels Los Angeles

Feature walls that people touch. We CNC-carve geometric patterns, textured reliefs, and architectural panels from wood and acrylic — up to 67" × 98" (170 × 250 cm) in a single pass. From brand walls to room dividers, built in our LA workshop.

What Are 3D Wall Panels?

A 3D wall panel is a dimensional surface — carved, sculpted, or layered — that adds depth and tactile interest to an interior wall. Unlike flat decorative panels or peel-and-stick tiles, true 3D wall panels are CNC-carved from solid material with precise depth control, producing patterns that cast real shadows and change character as lighting shifts throughout the day.

At Lumberthing, every panel is cut on our large-format CNC router in Los Angeles. That means each piece is a one-off: your pattern, your dimensions, your material. There is no catalog of stock shapes — we carve what you design, or we design it with you from scratch. The result is a custom wall panel that fits your space exactly, down to the millimeter.

This is the difference between a mass-produced decorative tile and a CNC-carved panel made for a specific wall in a specific room. One is a product. The other is fabrication.

Types of 3D Wall Panels We Make

We organize our panel work into four categories, each with its own design language and typical use cases:

  • Geometric Panels — Hexagonal tessellations, parametric wave patterns, abstract angular compositions. These are the panels that photograph well and anchor a modern interior. Popular in restaurants, lobbies, and retail feature walls.
  • Architectural Panels — Screen walls, room dividers, perforated partitions. Functional as well as decorative — they shape space, control sightlines, and filter light. Common in open-plan offices, hotel lobbies, and med spa treatment areas.
  • Brand Walls — 3D logos, dimensional typography, and brand-integrated installations that combine carved elements with painted surfaces, acrylic, or LED backlighting. These are statement pieces for reception areas, showrooms, and event backdrops.
  • Textured Panels — Organic carved surfaces: wood grain relief, bark textures, stone-inspired patterns, flowing topographic lines. Softer and more natural than geometric work — a good fit for wellness spaces, spas, and residential feature walls.

Materials for Custom Wall Panels

Material choice depends on the environment, the design, and the budget. Here is what we work with and when each makes sense:

  • MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) — The workhorse for painted panels. Machines cleanly, takes paint perfectly, and costs less than solid wood. Best for interior feature walls where the panel will be primed and finished in a solid color. Most decorative wall panel custom projects start here.
  • Plywood (Baltic Birch) — Stronger than MDF and shows beautiful edge layering when carved. Good for panels that will be clear-coated or stained rather than painted. Works well for architectural screens and room dividers that need structural integrity.
  • Hardwood (Walnut, Oak, Maple) — Premium option for panels where the wood grain is part of the design. CNC carving into solid hardwood produces pieces with real warmth and presence. Typical for high-end restaurants, corporate boardrooms, and residential installations.
  • Acrylic — Transparent or colored, acrylic panels are ideal for backlit installations and modern retail environments. We often combine acrylic layers with wood elements for mixed-material brand walls and lobby signs.
  • Foam / HDU (High-Density Urethane) — Lightweight and weather-resistant. The right choice for oversized installations where weight is a concern, temporary event builds, or exterior applications that need to withstand the elements.

Where 3D Wall Panels Work Best

The applications are broad, but certain environments benefit most from dimensional wall treatments:

  • Restaurants and bars — A carved feature wall behind the bar or along the dining room creates atmosphere that flat paint cannot. Geometric and textured panels are the most requested styles for hospitality.
  • Med spas and wellness centers — Organic textures and flowing patterns contribute to the calming environment these spaces require. Panels in treatment room accent walls and reception areas set the tone from the moment a client walks in.
  • Corporate offices and showrooms — Brand walls with dimensional logos turn a plain reception area into a memorable first impression. See examples in our project gallery.
  • Retail environments — Product display walls, fitting room accents, and storefront installations that draw attention from the street. Backlit acrylic panels are particularly effective here.
  • Room dividers and partitions — Architectural panels serve double duty: they separate space while adding visual interest. CNC-cut screens with through-patterns allow light to pass while maintaining privacy.

Our CNC Advantage: Large-Format Single-Pass Carving

Our CNC router has a 67" × 98" (170 × 250 cm) work field — one of the largest available in Los Angeles for custom panel work. That matters because it means we can carve a full wall panel in a single pass with no seams, no alignment issues, and no pattern breaks.

The machine offers precise Z-axis depth control, which is what makes true 3D relief carving possible. We can program graduated depths within the same panel — shallow surface texture transitioning into deep carved channels — all in one operation. This is not a laser engraver marking the surface. It is a spindle removing material at controlled depths to create actual three-dimensional geometry.

For installations larger than our bed size, we design panels with intentional seam placement so the joints disappear into the pattern. Multi-panel walls of any scale are standard work for us.

Design Process: From File to Finished Panel

Every CNC carved wall panel project follows the same production path:

  1. Design intake — You send us a vector file (AI, SVG, DXF), a sketch, or just a description of what you want. Reference photos help.
  2. 3D modeling — We convert your design into a CNC-ready 3D model with defined carve depths, toolpaths, and material specs. You approve a digital mockup before we cut anything.
  3. Material selection — We recommend the right substrate based on your environment, finish preferences, and budget. Sample pieces are available.
  4. CNC carving — The panel is carved in our LA workshop. Depending on complexity, carving takes 2 to 8 hours per panel.
  5. Finishing — Sanding, priming, painting or clear-coating, edge treatment. We can match any RAL or Pantone color.
  6. Delivery and installation — We deliver and install throughout Los Angeles. Panels ship with French cleat or Z-clip mounting hardware included.

3D Wall Panel Pricing

Custom 3D wall panels in Los Angeles start from $2,200 for a standard carved panel. What affects the final price:

  • Size — Larger panels require more material, more machine time, and more careful handling. Our large-format panels (up to 67" × 98" / 170 × 250 cm) start from $4,500.
  • Design complexity — A simple repeating geometric pattern costs less to program and carve than a freeform sculptural relief with variable depths.
  • Material — MDF is the most affordable. Hardwood and acrylic cost more. Mixed-material panels (wood + acrylic + LED) are priced per project.
  • Finish — A single-color paint finish is included in base pricing. Multi-color, metallic, or specialty finishes add cost.
  • Installation — Panels include mounting hardware. On-site installation in LA is available and quoted separately based on wall conditions and access.
