Lobby Sign Installation: What to Expect Step by Step
You've approved the design, the sign is fabricated, and now it's time to get it on the wall. Lobby sign installation sounds simple — and for you, it should be. But there's a methodical process behind every clean install. Here's what happens from start to finish so you know exactly what to expect.
Step 1: Site Survey and Wall Assessment
Before we build anything, we assess your wall. This usually happens during the design phase, but it directly determines installation method. We're checking:
- Wall material: drywall over studs, concrete, brick, glass, wood paneling — each requires different anchoring
- Stud locations: for signs over 15 lbs (7 kg), we anchor into studs or use appropriate concrete fasteners
- Electrical access: backlit signs need a power connection within 6 feet (1.8 m) of the sign location
- Surface condition: bumps, textures, or existing holes that might affect flush mounting
- Lighting: ambient light direction affects how shadow lines and backlighting read in the space
For most lobby sign projects in Los Angeles, we do this assessment in person. It takes about 20 minutes and prevents surprises on install day.
Step 2: Creating the Installation Template
Every sign gets a paper or vinyl template — a full-size outline showing exact placement of each mounting point. This template gets taped to the wall before any holes are drilled. It serves two purposes:
- You confirm the exact position, height, and centering before anything permanent happens
- We mark drill points with precision, ensuring level alignment across multiple elements
For dimensional letter signs (individual letters mounted separately), the template shows every letter position. A typical 5-letter firm name might have 10–15 mounting points. The template eliminates guesswork.
Step 3: Mounting Methods
The three primary methods we use, matched to sign weight and wall type:
Standoff Pins (Floating Mount)
The most popular method for lobby signs. Threaded metal standoffs hold the sign 0.5–1.5 inches (1.3–3.8 cm) off the wall, creating a floating effect with visible shadow lines. Each standoff anchors into the wall with a threaded stud.
- Best for: acrylic signs, metal letters, lightweight wood panels under 20 lbs (9 kg)
- Wall types: drywall (with anchors), concrete, wood
- Standoff diameters: typically 3/4 inch (19 mm) for signage applications
French Cleats
A beveled rail system — one piece mounts to the wall, the matching piece attaches to the sign back. The sign hooks over the wall rail and locks in place by gravity. Extremely secure and allows easy removal for maintenance.
- Best for: heavy signs over 20 lbs (9 kg), large panels, signs that may need future removal
- Wall types: stud-mounted (must hit studs or use heavy-duty anchors)
- Weight capacity: 50–200+ lbs (23–90+ kg) depending on rail length and fastener count
Industrial Adhesive (VHB Tape)
3M VHB (Very High Bond) tape provides permanent adhesion without drilling. Used when holes aren't acceptable — marble walls, glass, or rental spaces with strict lease terms.
- Best for: lightweight signs under 10 lbs (4.5 kg), smooth non-porous surfaces
- Wall types: glass, polished stone, smooth painted drywall
- Note: requires 72-hour cure time for full bond strength
Step 4: Electrical Work (Backlit Signs Only)
Halo-lit and front-lit signs need power. Our signs use low-voltage LED drivers, so the requirements are modest — a standard 120V outlet within reach. Here's what the electrical portion involves:
- LED driver mounts behind the sign or in an accessible ceiling/wall cavity
- Low-voltage wiring (12V or 24V DC) runs from driver to LED modules inside the sign
- Connection to building power: either hardwired to a switch or plugged into a nearby outlet
- If no outlet exists, we coordinate with your electrician to add one — this is the one part that may require a separate trade
Step 5: The Install Itself
Install day is anticlimactic by design. That's the point. A typical non-illuminated lobby sign takes 2–3 hours:
- 30 minutes: template placement, final approval of position
- 45 minutes: drilling, anchoring, and mounting hardware installation
- 30 minutes: sign placement and leveling
- 15 minutes: cleanup — patching any test holes, vacuuming dust, removing protective film
Backlit signs add 1–2 hours for electrical connection and LED testing. We test every LED zone before closing up the sign.
What's Included in Our Installation
Every Lumberthing install includes:
- Site survey and wall assessment
- Full-size positioning template
- All mounting hardware (standoffs, anchors, cleats — whatever your wall needs)
- Professional installation by our fabrication team (not a subcontracted handyman)
- Cleanup and debris removal
- Photo documentation of the finished install
Installation is included in our sign pricing for the greater Los Angeles area. We don't charge a separate install fee for standard lobby signs.
Timeline: Design to Wall
The full timeline from first conversation to installed sign:
- Week 1: consultation, site survey, design concepts
- Week 2: design refinement and approval
- Weeks 3–4: fabrication (CNC cutting, finishing, assembly)
- Week 4–5: installation scheduling and execution
Most projects complete in 3–4 weeks. Rush timelines (2 weeks) are possible for simpler designs when our production schedule allows.
After Installation
Once your sign is up, there's minimal maintenance. Non-illuminated signs need occasional dusting. Backlit signs have LED lifespans of 50,000+ hours — that's over 11 years of 12-hour daily use. If anything needs attention down the line, reach out and we'll handle it.
Frequently Asked Questions
Most single-piece lobby signs install in 2–4 hours. Multi-component installations with electrical (backlit signs) may take a full day. We schedule installations during off-hours when possible.
The three main methods are standoff pins (floating look), French cleats (heavy pieces, easy removal), and industrial adhesive (lightweight signs on smooth surfaces). Wall material determines the best approach.
We handle all prep work. During the site survey we assess wall material, stud locations, and electrical access. If minor patching or painting is needed behind the sign area, we'll coordinate that with you beforehand.
